  • Science: The properties of some materials influence their use. Some materials may be more suitable for making a particular product or device. (2e)

NETS-S

Review what it means to be green and how recycling and reusing materials helps protect the Earth.

Discuss how our school is considered a green school and if we should have a green playground. Explore the different materials that would be best suited for the playground. Review graphic organizer that will be used to gather information. Also review rubric for project expectations.

Diplay the list of websites that students can use to complete research. Ask students to find playground equipment that meet our criteria and record their notes on the graphic organizer.

Using their notes, students will create a list of equipment that could be used to build the new school playground.Students will document any key ideas that was shared during collaboration as well as points to explore in the next lesson.

Notes: Students will work collaboratively to search for equipment made from recycled materials.

Monitor

Ongoing Assessment: Duirng the lesson, observes student interactions with group members and their discussions. If students seem to be having trouble completing any of the task, provide some guided questions that will help complete the task. On a checklist make note of student and group interactions for the assignment. Check for understanding by having students share out their findings with the class.

Accommodations: An FM system will be used for my students with hearing loss. My students who prefer to work off line

will use their journal to take notes and hard copies for the websites selected for this assignment.

Back-up plan: In the event there is a problem with technology, I will have colored pictures available of the different materials that can be recycled. The whiteboard can be used to create a list of potential equipment for the new playground.

Evaluation

Lesson Reflections and Notes: If technology was used, consider if students were able to successfully use search engines, navigate, and find information. Consider if the student groupings were productive, or if changes need to be made. If students have not completed all tasks, plan for more time in the lesson in the future and allow them to finish at the start of the next lesson. However, there may be opportunities to finish in class if other content activities are completed ahead of schedule.
